Sometimes, when the sun is barely up and you’re struggling to climb out of bed, the biggest motivator for grabbing your running shoes and hitting the trail is seeing your pooch’s tail wagging with ‘let’s-go-running’ enthusiasm.

 

These are our 5 favourite breeds of furry friends to go running with:

 

1. Labrador

Ah yes, the loveable Lab. It’s really no surprise that he’s on this list. Lean and sturdy with plenty of energy, he can keep pace with a sprint workout or go the distance on a longer training cruise. He can be extremely obedient and tireless, making him one of the best running companions.

 

2. Australian Cattle Dog

This one’s a no-brainer, too. Bred as a natural herder, the Australian Cattle Dog (also called the Queensland, Blue, or Red Heeler) is athletic and agile with an instinctual hard work ethic. They love having a job or task to do, so they make perfect running partners to push you out the door.

 

3. Poodle

Don’t laugh, we’re serious. Although the breed might seem to be on the small and adorably fluffy side, the Poodle shouldn’t be overlooked when it comes to running. They’ve got plenty of energy and loads of intelligence, plus lots of athletic instincts. In fact, they were originally bred as a water retriever, a job that requires jumping in the water to fetch waterfowl for hunters.

 

4. Jack Russell Terrier

Small but unstoppable, the Jack Russell Terrier has endless energy and can run for extended periods of time. If you’re looking for a smaller long-distance running companion, this adventurous breed is perfect.

 

5. German Shepherd

This guy’s known for having many talents, and running is one of them. Strong and strongly built, this breed can keep pace with the best of them. Even better, German Shepherds are great with children, are very protective and very eager to please — making them much more than just a running companion.
